Electro Pneumatic Positioner

Electro Pneumatic Positioner

An electro-pneumatic positioner is used to control valve positions through electronic signals. It combines the accuracy of electronics with the power of pneumatic systems. It ensures that valves move to the correct position based on the control signals.

VSR Global designs and delivers top-grade electro-pneumatic positioners, available with or without feedback options.

How the Electro-Pneumatic Positioner Works?

Understanding how the electro-pneumatic positioner works helps understand its role in responsive and accurate valve control.

    1. Receiving the Signal

  • The electro-pneumatic positioner receives an electrical signal (4–20 mA) from a controller.
  • The received signal communicates to the valve where it needs to be positioned.

    2. Converting the Signal

  • The electro-pneumatic positioner converts the electrical signal into air pressure.
  • It utilizes an I/P (current-to-pressure) converter and pneumatic relay for this process.

    3. Controlling the Actuator

  • Air pressure is sent to the pneumatic actuator.
  • The actuator moves the valve stem based on the air pressure.

    4. Feedback System

  • A feedback system verifies the exact position of the valve.
  • It compares the checked position to the desired position and adjusts the air pressure if required.
  • This ensures the valve stays in the appropriate position.

    5. Force Balance

  • The electro-pneumatic positioner works on a force-balance principle.
  • It balances the input signal force with feedback force to maintain the steadiness and accuracy of the valve.
